Firefighters save landmark building

Yesterday afternoon fire broke out in the attic of the Corinna Union Academy Building. Firefighters from Corinna, Newport, Saint Albans, Dexter, Hartland, Garland and Pittsfield responded. By 5:00 PM the blaze was out and the building saved. There is a bad hole in the roof on the back side, damage to an upstairs room and water damage. However, had it not been for the work of local fire departments, it would have been much worse.

I haven't heard anything definite about the cause but my own speculation is that it might have been lightning. The night before we had a heavy thundershower and people in the area of the building heard a nasty crack of thunder close by.

Cleanup funding reduced

An article printed yesterday in the Bangor Daily News say that the federal government has reduced this year's funding for the Superfund cleanup in Corinna from the expected $12 million to just $5 million. The SCCE TAG committee has no word yet from officials involved with the Corinna cleanup as to how this will impact the work in town. I'll post any information we receive. For another perspective and a chance to voice your opinion, visit The Cattail Forum and see the reprint of a New York Times article Chad Stratton posted there under "Questions about the Cleanup".
