Lately, in Corinna...

July 10, 2002

Not far down stream from Corinna Village the East Branch of the Sebasticook River opens up to a broad, shallow waterway. This aerial photo of the area about halfway along the three miles to Sebasticook Lake, shows the islands and wooded shoreline of the river. The EPA calls this Operational Unit 2. Studies show river sediments and some flood plains are contaminated with chlorobenzene and pesticides from the Eastland Woolen Mill. Some heavy metals were also found. The contaminants are shallow but wide-spread. Excavation, as done in Corinna village, may not be feasible in most areas. The EPA will propose cleanup actions for this area in 2003. Contaminants have not been found in sediments in Sebasticook Lake.
