Lately, in Corinna...

This picture of the soil treatment facility was taken from the bell tower of the Stewart Library Building. The long structures in the center, made from concrete blocks, are the soil treatment bins. Each bin is divided into two units that can hold about 500 tons of soil for decontamination. In the bins the soil is heated to around 150 degrees using hot, moist air from propane furnaces. The heat drives off the contamination which is then collected in charcoal filters. After decontamination the soil is safe for unrestricted human contact and can be used in residential or industrial locations. The EPA's goal is to complete the soil treatment by 2004. The treatment facility and the mill-floor slab will be removed in 2005.
