The Cattail Press receives Governor's Award

Ken Dow receives award from Governor Angus King
and DEP Commissioner Martha Kirkpatrick

At a ceremony in Augusta on September 22, 2000, Governor Angus King presented the Governor's Awards for Environmental Excellence. The Cattail Press web site was one of the winners in the Education Category. I thank the Governor and Commissioner for this honor.

I also want to thank Rebecca Hewett, Mark Hyland and Denise Messier of the Division of Remediation of the Maine Department of Environmental Protect. They nominated the Cattail Press for the award.

Rick Leighton, others of the EPA and the contractors, HLA, Weston, Cianbro, and Snowman have provided information and access to the Eastland site. Some of the best pictures we've had were taken while Rick patiently stood by, waiting while I fiddled with my camera. Their efforts are much appreciated.

I am truly honored. Nineteen other awards were given to companies and organizations with impressive efforts in the categories of pollution prevention, stewardship, sustainable development, government programs and environmental management systems. The award to The Cattail Press in the education category "recognizes educational projects that have significantly advanced awareness and understanding of environmental protection issues."

I thank all of you, the readers and contributors to the web site. It is your contributions that have sustained the site and provided the most interesting content, your memories, reactions, stories and questions. What started as a place to exhibit pictures has become, through your interaction, more like a community connecting people who share a common interest.
