After the fire at the
Corinna Union Academy Museum

There is lots of damage, especially upstairs in the west wing. This is the west stairway. A real mess but the damage here is superficial, smoke, water, soot and insulation.

There was a thunderstorm Wednesday evening. It is likely that lightning hit the building just outside this room and started a fire that smoldered in the wall and up into the attic until smoke was spotted mid-afternoon on Thursday.

Located on the first landing of the west stairway, this room served as the museum library. Plywood now covers an opening out through the back wall. The light area to the right of the light fixture is a hole out through the roof.

The books from the library room are not burned. Some have water damage but most are in good condition. Since the fire they have been moved to the east wing. This room used to be the science classroom. It is in good shape with only some water and ceiling damage.

(This is the classroom where I started my teaching career in 1974. My father also taught here.)

Here is the most extensive damage, in the upstairs room in the west wing, what used to be the math classroom. The ceiling toward the back of the building has come down, the roof above is badly burned and open to the weather. This room housed the Eastland Woolen Mill artifacts. At this point it is difficult to know how much can be salvaged.

The Corinna Historical Society is still formulating their plans for cleanup and restoration. The building is in good shape, considering the circumstances. However, it will be a huge job. They will need help from the community organizing, fund-raising and doing the physical work. The building is a priceless landmark. The collection of artifacts represents our history. It will be a project worthy of our participation.
