Main Street, 1999 and 1898

Now

This picture was taken from the bell tower of the Stewart Library Building on November 11, 1999. The mill dominates the view. Before you go on the the next page, click this picture for an enlarged copy. Be sure to find the Methodist Church just behind the boiler stack. Look for the building that used to be Pearson's Store to the right where Route 222 enters Main Street. Also notice the mill pond, much of it hidden by the mill.

Then

Of all the pictures I have taken and looked at in the past two years, this is my favorite. It must have been taken from the bell tower of the Stewart Library Building around 1898. The large, two-story building in the foreground on Main Street is the Ireland Brothers grist mill. It burned in 1904.

Find the Methodist Church in the center. What used to be Pearson's Store is on the far right. The railroad station is to the left.

More than any picture I've seen, this one conveys what Main Street was like one hundred years ago. Click on this picture for an enlarged copy.
