PUBLIC WEEKLY UPDATE

NON-TIME CRITICAL REMOVAL ACTION

EASTLAND WOOLEN MILL SUPERFUND SITE

CORINNA, MAINE

The following summarizes WESTON’s work completed at the Eastland Woolen Mill Site for week ending Friday October 12, 2001:

Safety Update:

  • Conducted daily safety inspections on all heavy equipment used on site.
  • All work was completed in level D or modified level D personal protective equipment.
  • Performed daily dust monitoring of the area surrounding the entire site including the new-screened soil stockpile, the contaminated soil stockpile, and Area 1 excavation.

Work Accomplished by WESTON and Subcontractors:

  • Excavated clean cutback (1,504yds), contaminated soil (6,752yds), clean topsoil (80yds), contaminated concrete/rock (32yds), and clean concrete/rock (272yds) from Area 1 and transported to the appropriate on-site stockpiles.
  • Transported 1,232yds of washed cobble from subcontractor’s washing operation to Area 1.
  • Transported 1,690yds of clean stone from off-site locations for backfill of Area 1.
  • Continued washing oversized rock.
  • Performed water quality (temperature, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity) readings south of Corundel Dam and south of the new bridge.
  • Began installation of risers for the groundwater management system in Area 1.
  • Transported pea stone (42yds) and sand (264yds) into Area 1 for backfill around the risers installed for the groundwater management system.
  • Completed removal of carbon trench from Area 1.
  • Collected soil samples from Area 1.
  • Completed Corundel Dam repair.
  • Water treatment plant treated a total of 82,620 gallons.
  • Continued contaminated soil screening operation.
  • Continued washing rock.
  • Transported screened material to the new screened contaminated soil stockpile.
  • Continued site dust control.

Two-week Projection:

The following summarizes the anticipated work to be completed for the next two week time period (October 15 through October 29).

  • Complete Area 1 excavation.
  • Continue backfilling Area 1.
