PUBLIC WEEKLY UPDATE #9

EASTLAND WOOLEN MILL SITE

CORINNA, ME

 

The following summarizes WESTON's work completed on the Eastland Woolen Mill Site for week ending Friday August 25, 2000:

 

Safety Update:

  • Conducted daily safety inspections on the heavy equipment used on site.
  • Performed real-time air monitoring of the site perimeter.
  • Workers in excavation area continued to wear modified level D personal protective equipment.

 

Work Accomplished:

  • Continued excavation of clean river bank material from Area 2 in order to access deeper soils. Excavated a total of 2160 yd3 of clean riverbank material from Area 2.
  • Stockpiled all excavated clean soil material at the designated soil stockpile area on-site.
  • Continued backfilling of Area 3 with clean soil. Backfilled approximately 3825 yd3 into Area 3.
  • Collected daily soil samples from the excavation areas and sent to the on-site laboratory for analysis.
  • Continued work on improving the layout of the water treatment system.
  • Performed daily water quality readings for turbidity, temperature and dissolved oxygen at locations near Corundel Lake dam and downstream of the Area 3 excavation.
  • Continued installation of water line from Rt. 222 towards the river. Also continued installation of sewer line along Rt. 222.
  • Demolished Henderson’s Store and W. Ripley’s Building and removed the demolition debris from the site.
  • Continued dust control around the work site.
  • Continued night shift monitoring of pumps.

 

Two-week Projection:

The following summarizes the anticipated work to be completed for the next two week time period (August 28 through September 11):

  • Continue ongoing maintenance of erosion controls, construction fencing, and security fence around the work site.
  • Continue maintenance of dewatering pumps, river bypass pumps, and all associated piping.
  • Complete backfilling of Area 3.
  • Continue excavation and removal of clean bank material from Area 2.
  • Complete demolition of buildings on Main Street and Rt. 7 & 11.
  • Preparatory work for moving Odd Fellows building.
  • Continue dust control and air monitoring.
  • Continue utility relocation along Stetson and Newport Roads.
