NON-TIME CRITICAL REMOVAL ACTION

EASTLAND WOOLEN MILL SITE

CORINNA, ME

 

The following summarizes WESTON's work completed on the Eastland Woolen Mill Site for week ending Friday September 22, 2000:

Safety Update:

  • Conducted daily safety inspections on the heavy equipment used on site.
  • Conducted daily air monitoring along the perimeter of the mill complex fencing including Areas 2 & 3, the stockpile area, and the decontamination pad. Preliminary analytical results for samples were below detection limits.
  • Conducted daily real-time air monitoring for the perimeter of the former mill property and the exclusion zone. Results were below the action levels.
  • Workers in excavation areas continued to wear modified level D personal protective equipment.

 

Work Accomplished by WESTON:

  • Began excavation of Area 2. Excavated a total of 2730 yd3 of contaminated material from Area 2.
  • Began backfilling Area 2.5 with gravel. Backfilled approximately 1187yd3 into Area 2.5.
  • Backfilled 648yd3 of material into Area 2 behind the Odd Fellows Building.
  • Continued dewatering activities in Area 2.5.
  • Continued preparation for stockpile extension, and began installation of 40-mil LLDPE liner.
  • Placed frac tank in Lot #88.
  • Continued dewatering activities in Area 2.5.
  • Performed water quality readings (temperature, DO, turbidity) above Corundel dam and downstream of Area 3 excavation.
  • Collected 41 soil samples from Area 2 and 2.5, and surveyed all soil sample collection locations.
  • Completed installation of water line. Continued installation of sewer line along Rt. 222 and Rt. 7/11.
  • Continued preparation for Odd Fellows Building move by removing non-load bearing basement walls, and installing tension wires.
  • Continued dust control around the work site.
  • Continued night shift monitoring of pumps.

 

The following summarizes the anticipated work to be completed for the next two week time period (October 2 through October 16):

  • Continue ongoing maintenance of erosion controls, construction fencing, and security fence around the work site.
  • Continue maintenance of dewatering pumps, river bypass pumps, and all associated piping.
  • Complete backfilling of Area 2 and 2.5.
  • Complete extension of contaminated soil stockpile area.
  • Continue excavation and removal of clean bank material from Areas 2.
  • Pour foundation for Odd Fellows building on Lot 118A.
  • Continue Odd Fellows Building move preparation.
  • Continue dust control and air monitoring.
  • Complete utility relocation along Stetson and Newport Roads.
  • Remove traffic detour for utility installation on Newport Road.
