Weekly Update and Two-week Projection of Work from Roy F. Weston, Inc.

NON-TIME CRITICAL REMOVAL ACTION

EASTLAND WOOLEN MILL SITE

CORINNA, ME

 

The following summarizes WESTON's work completed on the Eastland Woolen Mill Site for week ending Friday September 8, 2000:

Safety Update:

  • Conducted daily safety inspections on the heavy equipment used on site.
  • Conducted daily air monitoring along the perimeter of the mill complex fencing including Areas 2 & 3, the stockpile area, and the decontamination pad. Preliminary analytical results for samples were below detection limits.
  • Conducted daily real-time air monitoring for the perimeter of the former mill property and the exclusion zone. Results were below the action levels.
  • Workers in excavation areas continued to wear modified level D personal protective equipment.

 

Work Accomplished by WESTON:

  • Completed excavation of Area 2.5 on September 8, 2000. A total of 3975 yd3 was excavated from this area.
  • Placed 90 yd3 of crushed concrete on contaminated soil stockpile staging area.
  • Graded contaminated soil stockpile area in order to achieve improved drainage.
  • Completed consolidation of HLA’s soil storage drums.
  • Performed water quality readings (temperature, DO, turbidity) above Corundel dam and downstream of Area 3 excavation.
  • Collected a total of 69 soil samples from Area 2.5.
  • Surveyed all soil sample collection locations.
  • Demolished Gould’s Building, loaded all demolition debris and removed from the site, and re-graded foundation areas.
  • Installed 156’ of 12" sewer pipe between SMH W-1 and SMH W-2 on the west side of the river. Also, SMH E-1 was installed without a frame and cover. On the east side of the river, 65’ of 8" sewer pipe was installed between SMH E-1 and E-2.
  • Continued dust control around the work site.
  • Continued night shift monitoring of pumps.

 

Two-week Projection:

The following summarizes the anticipated work to be completed for the next two week time period (September 11 through September 25):

  • Continue ongoing maintenance of erosion controls, construction fencing, and security fence around the work site.
  • Continue maintenance of dewatering pumps, river bypass pumps, and all associated piping.
  • Complete backfilling of Area 2.5.
  • Begin extension of contaminated soil stockpile area.
  • Continue excavation and removal of clean bank material from Areas 2.
  • Preparatory work for moving Odd Fellows building.
  • Continue dust control and air monitoring.
  • Continue utility relocation along Stetson and Newport Roads.
  • Continue detouring traffic for utility installation on Newport Road.
