Weekly Update and Two-week Projection of Work from Roy F. Weston, Inc.

PUBLIC UPDATE #12

NON-TIME CRITICAL REMOVAL ACTION

EASTLAND WOOLEN MILL SITE

CORINNA, ME

The following summarizes WESTON's work completed on the Eastland Woolen Mill Site for week ending Friday September 15, 2000:

 

Safety Update:

  • Conducted daily safety inspections on the heavy equipment used on site.
  • Conducted daily air monitoring along the perimeter of the mill complex fencing including Areas 2 & 3, the stockpile area, and the decontamination pad. Preliminary analytical results for samples were below detection limits.
  • Conducted daily real-time air monitoring for the perimeter of the former mill property and the exclusion zone. Results were below the action levels.
  • Workers in excavation areas continued to wear modified level D personal protective equipment.

 

Work Accomplished by WESTON:

  • Continued excavation of Area 2.5. Excavated a total of approximately 10,110 yd3 from this area.
  • Continued excavation of clean riverbank material from Area 2.5. Excavated a total of 4350 yd3 of clean riverbank material.
  • Continued hauling clean riverbank material for demolished building foundations. A total of 810 yd3 has been hauled into the foundations.
  • Completed moving clean riverbank soil stockpile north, and began preparation for stockpile extension.
  • Performed water quality readings (temperature, DO, turbidity) above Corundel dam and downstream of Area 3 excavation.
  • Collected a total of 28 soil samples from Area 2.5, and surveyed all soil sample collection locations.
  • Continued installation of water line west of the river towards Rt.7, installed river crossing pipe in Area 3, and installed inverts in the siphon outlet.
  • Continued preparation for Odd Fellows Building move. Excavated for new Odd Fellows Building foundation on Lot #118A.
  • Continued dust control around the work site.
  • Continued night shift monitoring of pumps.

 

Two-week Projection:

The following summarizes the anticipated work to be completed for the next two week time period (September 18 through October 2):

  • Continue ongoing maintenance of erosion controls, construction fencing, and security fence around the work site.
  • Continue maintenance of dewatering pumps, river bypass pumps, and all associated piping.
  • Complete backfilling of Area 2.5.
  • Begin extension of contaminated soil stockpile area.
  • Continue excavation and removal of clean bank material from Areas 2.
  • Pour foundation for Odd Fellows building on new lot.
  • Preparatory work for moving Odd Fellows building.
  • Continue dust control and air monitoring.
  • Complete utility relocation along Stetson and Newport Roads.
  • Continue detouring traffic for utility installation on Newport Road.
