Lately, in Corinna...

April 9, 2001

The huge pile of excavated contaminated soil, covered by a black tarp, sits above the East Branch of the Sebasticook River in Corinna. The pile contains about 18,000 cubic yards of soil tainted with the chlorobenzene compounds dumped from the dye kettles in the woolen mill during the 1960's. Most of the soil in this pile was removed from the riverbed downstream from the mill.

There may be even more in the area directly beneath the old mill location and where the river flowed under Main Street. The excavation of that area is planned for this summer.
