Lately, in Corinna... July 2, 2000 |
These pictures were taken yesterday at the Alder Stream Dam on the Stetson Road. We looked at a photo of this area from the air a few days ago. This is the shore that used to be called the Swim Front. In the past it has been know as Sprague's Mill and Southard's Mill. These days it's quiet here. In the past, cars came and went, bringing kids for their swimming lessons. On hot summer days a crowd showed up for the "free swim" in the afternoon. When I was young there was even a little snack stand that sold ice cream and hot dogs. There used to be a wharf and buoy line separating the shallow and deep areas. A small storage building sat at the corner of the dam. Many Corinna kids learned to swim here. The area is still well cared for by the town. The covered picnic tables are still there by the stream. You can see that the bridge across the dam has been widened to accommodate snowmobiles crossing. The fire department now fills the water tanks on their trucks here. There must be many of you with memories of the Swim Front. |
