Lately, in Corinna...

Here is the Corinna Union Academy bell, on display in the building.

There is a story about where it has been. I'm told that the bell was removed from the building during the renovation in 1930. Apparently a contractor on the job took it home for safe keeping and failed to bring it back. After some time, when efforts to gain its return were unsuccessful, a small group of men from town had to go get the bell and bring it home. (There must be more to this story.)

I saw the bell for the first time around 1969 at Nokomis Regional High. It was used for sounds effects in a play production. Not long after, Hartland Cushman, then Superintendent of Schools and Herb Dow, Jr. arranged the return of the bell to Corinna where it has been in storage, in the hands of the CUA Trustees, for the past twenty years.

Herb Dow, Jr. built the yoke it now rests in.
