The picture above was sent in by Lois Rowe. She also sent the following message: "Last year on May 24, 2002 you (and your readers) helped me identify a flower that my husband and I found growing deep in the woods of Dixmont. It was identified as a cowslip. I made another trip into the woods this evening with my daughter Katie and took a photo of the original bed. I thought that I would share it with you (and your readers if you would like). Looks like the old apple tree has seen better days and has uprooted, although it still has some new leaves budding out on a couple of the branches. I think that these flowers must have been planted here to mark someone's gravesite. I guess we will never know. Lois Rowe" Thank you, Lois, for sending in the photo and your thoughts about the cowslip and the old apple tree. It is interesting to see the area a year later and speculate about how the plant came to be there. |
