Date: December 31, 2001 Name: C.R."Bing" Grindle Location: Roanoke, VA Email: crgrindle@worldnet.att.net Comment: I, too, wondered about the Odd Fellows building. The exterior really looks odd. Wonder how many fellows are still active and are they odd balls? Some shutters beside each window and a new paint job would surely make that odd square building more attractive for Corinna's new look. I seem to recall one day's Cattail entry that said the building was "oozing"...but I don't know what that meant and don't want to. It's odd that Marilyn Conway's comments were the first on the guest book so far. Also interesting that a GIRL commented about this. I wonder if there is an Odd Gals Organization. If you think I'm odd making fun of all this you're right, but it's fun. I'm sure it's a great organization. It's been around since 1795!
Date: December 31, 2001 Name: Richard Gallison Location: Clinton, Utah Email: Utahlady@xmission.com Comment: The Restaurant at that time was Sawtelles and the little building between the two stores was either or at one time........was Ed Levitt's Barber Shop---and Bill Cluky's Taxi as I remember it------I can't remember who was there first. But at 70 years old -----the memory is not like it used to be. By the way CUZ......don't look for me to move back to Corinna in the near future----this place is heaven compared to Maine-----but I still miss the people. especially ED & JUNE Jaworski......the best neighbors that anyone could ask for. Maybe I will get there some time next year to see all you fine people-till then--take care.

Date: December 31, 2001 Name: Peter Smith Location: Rockland, Maine Email: Comment: Ken, Great photos of Morse's Corner Church and school house! As a child my family lived near Morse's Corner. I do need to add a correction for Dec. 26th. The Church was built by Gorham Southard, not Graham Southard. He was the grandson of the C. Southworth that we have mentioned in earlier stories. Gorham was a carpenter and built many area buildings and I believe was involved in the building of C.U.A., now the Historical Society building. Another connection to Morse's Corner is that the Phillip Morse who originally owned the land the Church was located had married as his first wife, Lovina Southard, the daughter of C. Southworth. Phillip Morse was Gorham's uncle by marriage.
Peter- Thanks for the corrections and other info. -Ken
Date: December 29, 2001 Name: Alice Russell Belgard Location: Sandston, VA Email: alicebel@msn.com Comment: Ken Todays photo sort of sent the real message that you really can't go home if you've been away a long time. You can go to your folks home but a whole lot of "Going Home" has gone. Can not believe it's been so long since I have been in Corinna. Time sure can get away from you. So to all there, enjoy the great place you're at while you can. Hope all had a Merry Christmas And have a Greater New Year than ever before.
Date: December 29, 2001 Name: Marilyn Conway Location: Prague, OK Email: bmconway@brightok.net Comment: Are there any plans to improve the appearance of the exterior of the Odd Fellows Hall?
Marilyn- It certainly could use some spiffing up. As far as I know, the Odd Fellows Hall is the sole property of the Odd Fellows. The EPA's responsibility was to move it and set it up in the new location. I guess any other improvements would be the responsibility of the owners. -Ken

Thanks Norm. It has been an interesting year in Corinna. -Ken

HA HA HA, I laughed out loud when I saw that tonight. We haven't even had enough to plow yet, thank heavens.
Wish someone had a picture of the 1918 graduating class of CUA, my mother would be in that one, Mary Bemis Hartley.

Date: December 21, 2001 Name: Phil Young Location: Augusta (Home of the Rotaries) Email: younpm@aol.com Comment: Hi Ken
In the photo for December 20th, the only people I recognize are Alton Dow and, seated beside him, Kenneth Wentworth. Some of the others look familiar but I can't name them.
Holiday Greetings to all the Cattail family. Life would not be the same without "meeting" you here daily.
Date: December 21, 2001 Name: Bud Hilliker Location: Jacksonville FL Email: dhillike@bellsouth.net Comment: Dear Ken,
The Cattail Press has been the best gift for me this year. You have done an excellent job of making us old timers feel at home again.
God bless you, your Dad and Mrs. and all our friends. Have wonderful HOILIDAYS!
We will see you next summer. The snow on the computer is enough for us now.

Date: December 21, 2001 Name: Norm Clarke Location: Rockin' around the Christmas tree. Email: npclarke@gwi.net Comment: Ken, Can't identify anyone in the photo but is sure was a class with very attractive women. I cannot begin to guess why they are wearing Beatles haircuts some forty years early. The guy, third from the left, just won the Rudy Valee look alike contest and the others are supportive, yet jealous.
Date: December 21, 2001 Name: Wayne Brown Location: Fort Myers, FL Email: rubway@eathlink.net Comment: Regarding today's photo. 1927-28 is a bit before my time at CUA, however, Jerome Emerson or Howard Small must have been at the Academy at or soon after these persons. Some look familiar to me but I can not name them. Come to our rescue, Jerome and Howard. Best wishes for Happy Holidays to all.
In later years Alton "Bobbie" Dow was a good friend.

Date: December 20, 2001 Name: Alice Russell Belgard Location: Sandston, Va Email: alicebel@msn.com Comment: Glad to see the dam again. When I was young and think probably your Dad and Aunt Sally did what the rest of us kids did. We marched in the Memorial Day parade and when we got to the bridge going toward the Library we split in two lines and threw flowers given us over the bridge rail. Hoping others will remember those days.
Date: December 20, 2001 Name: Betsy Perkins Dorman Location: St. Albans Rd, Corinna Email: betsydorman@hotmail.com Comment: Alright, I admit it. After a snow storm I can hardly wait to get online and check out the "weather chair". It's not that I need to know how much snow we have, since I live 5 houses down the road from you. (I guess I need to "get a life", huh?) Happy Holidays to all!

Date: December 19, 2001 Name: June Jaworski Location: Corinna Email: jaworski@tdstelme.net Comment: Thank you so much for another picture of "the bog". I have so many good memories of birds and animals that I have seen down there. I love to use your pictures as wallpaper. "The Bog" had a sad summer this year with so little water. It did not look like its usual self, but maybe next year will be different. I have my own water place for birds this winter with a heated bird bath (last years Christmas present) And today during the snowstorm there were 4 starlings all splashing at once. Some fun. Merry White Christmas to everyone.

Date: December 17, 2001 Name: Alice Russell/Belgard Location: Sandston,Va Email: alicebel@msn.com Comment: As you can tell a lot has changed since the 50's and before when you could take a baby in a carriage asleep and run into P.O.. drug store. grocery store or even leave them outside in a play pen in your yard and know they were safe. Everybody really cared about each other. And in Corinna especially. The mill workers who could look out on Main St knew most people in town so watched out. Those were the days when if you messed up either somebody who saw you do it would let your parents know. The teachers lived in town and saw your parents on the street etc. It wouldn't have been NICE if Rebecca Stewart, Mr Leach, Mrs Pinkam or anyone of those great teachers had had to tell what had happened. The very worst thing I can remember my parents Hearing about was my younger brother Irving Class of 54 i believe being one of several boys who broke bulbs in street lights. But think it was probably Millard Quimby who told them Long time ago. Remember a couple tragedies. I believe it was Lloyd Bolstridge who would have graduated 51 with your parents ken who died in a sliding accident at home and Geneva Welch who would have graduated with my late brother Irving in 54.So young so much energy in both lives. One from the accident the other from the terrible polio epidemic. Was in Panama Canal Zone where my husband was stationed when she died. Felt so helpless as I knew her well. Leland was a friend as well as Marie. So many memories come back. Was pleased to hear from some friends and Wayne Brown. Knew the minute I saw a picture of him he had to be Cecil's son. He looks so much like Cecil. I'd have called him Mr Brown if I'd met him. We didn't call adults by their first name way back then.
Date: December 15, 2001 Name: Beth Belgard-Crader Location: Worcester, MA Email: mishashanti@webv.net Comment: I was fortunate to have been born in Dexter. My parents were from ME. My grandparents Harold and Gladys Russell lived only a few minutes from Main Street, beside the Funeral Home. My Aunt Marion and Uncle Gaylon Irish both worked at Mill for years. At present I think my cousin Scott still lives in Corinna. I went to school there one year while my father was overseas and we stayed with my grandparents. It 1959 or so. I haven't been back since my Uncle died, except to drive through to Dexter and Guilford. I loved Corinna and still do. It was always so beautiful. When I was a baby my Aunt took me down to the center, left me outside, she then shopped and went home without me! Corinna will always be a part of me and the Russell family.
Date: December 15, 2001 Name: Bob Wallace Location: Duluth, MN Email: rjw@mx3.com Comment: Just wanted to say how much I enjoy the wall paper collection. Between home and two offices I have five computers, all with Cattail Press wall paper on them. I find different scenes really handy to quickly identify on my lap top how I am logged on (network or local for example). I really like the different shots of the bog in different seasons. I am hoping that a winter shot of the swim front will show up this year as it would fit nicely with the summer and fall shots there. The winter tree is also one of my favorites. Ken really does provide so much enjoyment to so many. Thanks.
Bob- Thank you, I am pleased that you enjoy the wallpaper. There will be a winter Swim Front picture this year. -Ken
Date: December 14, 2001 Name: Howard Small Location: YARMOUTH Email: how-Small@webtv.net Comment: Your Dec 10 photo. If as I think it was taken at the corner of main and Stetson road. Where you were standing was once the lawn for Kenwood Inn which my parents ran after being burned out in the Realty Hotel fire. The lawn was the largest in Corinna at the time. I used to mow it with the first gas powered mower in town. It was an oversize old style push mower with the gas engine and tank mounted on the heavy handle. It had a reel type starter similar to some today. Trouble was it was heavy and had to be lifted around corners. The gas tank was connected by copper tubing which constantly sprung leaks due to vibrations. It was a 3 hour job with the self propelled and I soon found out it was quicker 2 hours with the old fashion push mower. I realize this probably should have been sent to your forum as it was 70 years ago.

Date: December 10, 2001 Name: Ronald Russell Location: Rumford Email: ronrus@loa.com Comment: After reading the Maine Snowmobile Association newspaper, I am glad to see that the Corinna snowmobile club has purchased a Tucker to groom their trails. A photo of this machine would be good to show on the cattail press someday. We have had one here for 3 years and it sure makes a big difference. Also if anyone has a trail map of the Corinna trails I would like a copy as I plan to ride in the area at least once this winter. You can send it e-mail or to P.O. Box 367 Rumford, ME 04276.

Date: December 6, 2001 Name: Norm Clarke Location: With the vice president at an undisclosed location Email: npclarke@gwi.net Comment: Ken,
I know I missed the article but why does the road, coming down the hill where Pleasant Street and the Nokomis road meet, have to be re routed? Why can't it stay in the present configuration where it connects with Route 7? Is it because it's a sharp turn?
Also, when the hole is filled in, will it be available for commercial development or just for a park or non building use?
Why do we have to pre board a plane? Does that mean we get on before we get on?Norm- Yes, the sharp turn at the base of the hill needs to be changed. Plans call for the expansion of Winchester Park, however, most of the land will be available for commercial development. This is a good question. Follow this link for more info. -Ken

Going back to Corinna while my parents were alive you Knew you were home when you saw the mill or the Library. Am sorry to see my foot steps from all those years of trodding through Main St. and down to the elementary school, on up the hill to CUA or later just pushing Beth Annes carriage around have all gone into big piles of soil to be decontaminated. But Thank God the contamination was found before a lot more problems developed.
