PUBLIC WEEKLY UPDATE #8
EASTLAND WOOLEN MILL SITE
CORINNA, ME
The following summarizes WESTON's work completed on the Eastland Woolen Mill Site ( for week ending Saturday August 19, 2000:
Safety Update:
- Conducted daily safety inspections on the heavy equipment used on site.
- Performed real-time air monitoring of the site perimeter.
- Workers in excavation area continued to wear modified level D personal protective equipment.
Work Accomplished:
- Completed excavation of Area 3. Excavated approximately 6000 yd3 of contaminated soil from the river (Area 3).
- Stockpiled all excavated contaminated soil at the designated soil stockpile area on-site.
- Continued excavation of clean river bank material from Area 3 in order to access deeper soils. Excavated a total of 1215 yd3 of clean riverbank material from Area 3.
- Continued backfilling of Area 3 with clean soil.
- Collected daily soil samples from the excavation area and sent to the on-site laboratory for analysis.
- Continued work on improving the layout of the water treatment system.
- Performed daily water quality readings for turbidity, temperature and dissolved oxygen at locations near Corundel Lake dam and downstream of the Area 3 excavation.
- Continued installation of water line from Rt. 222 towards the river. Also installed approximately 200’ of sewer line along Rt. 222.
- Performed a topographical survey of Area 2.
- Continued dust control around the work site.
- Continued night shift monitoring of pumps.
Two-week Projection:
The following summarizes the anticipated work to be completed for the next two week time period (August 21 through September 4):
- Continue ongoing maintenance of erosion controls, construction fencing, and security fence around the work site.
- Continue maintenance of dewatering pumps, river bypass pumps, and all associated piping.
- Continue backfilling of Area 3.
- Continue excavation and removal of clean bank material from Area 2.
- Complete demolition of buildings on Main Street and Rt. 7 & 11.
- Preparatory work for moving Odd Fellows building.
- Continue dust control and air monitoring.
- Continue utility relocation along Stetson and Newport Roads.
- Begin excavation in Area 2 (north of railroad trestle).
