A Visit “Under The Town”
Corinna, Maine
Before the demolition of the Eastland Woolen Mill and most of the area of Main Street in 2000, the Odd Fellows Hall sat on girders over the East Branch of the Sebasticook River. The river flowed under the the mill, under Main Street, and under the building. The bridge was hardly noticeable from the street.
Below the building and the bridge was an area some locals called “under the town”. When the water was low in the stream, daredevil teenagers would move sideways on a narrow concrete ledge, along the river below the building, to reach a small area under the Main Street bridge. Before the demolition I visited this place and took the pictures in this short video.
There are many stories from the generations of kids who visited this area. You can see graffiti that accumulated over the years. I edited the photos to make them a bit more appropriate for viewing. Those of you who also went to this place will recognize the area. The video ends with the view downstream a visitor would see when coming out.
