The EPA has announced the
formal cleanup proposal for Operational Unit 1, the Corinna village area
impacted by the chemicals released from the Eastland Woolen Mill. In
addition to the work already done on the site, the major element of the
cleanup proposal are:
-
Prevent contaminated
groundwater from migrating offsite or into the East Branch of the
Sebasticook River, and restore the aquifer to drinking water quality
by extracting contaminated groundwater.
-
Treat the groundwater
removed from the aquifer prior to discharging it back into the
ground or the river.
-
Inject reagents into
the contaminated soil and bedrock to destroy the contaminates and
enhanced flushing of contaminates
-
Implement long-term
monitoring of the site.
-
Restrict public access
to contaminated groundwater.
-
Review the cleanup
every five years.
The EPA will hold a public
information meeting on this proposed plan on July 17, 2002 at the
Corinna School Cafeteria, at 7:00 p.m. A formal comment session will be
on August 7, 2002.
