In
the picture from July 14 you
may have noticed a pipe running down the river bed. This pipe has been
there for as long as I can remember. I used think it was a sewer pipe. But
that may not be what it is.
At some point, many years ago, a pipe was installed to carry water all the way from the upper dam down to the Snow Flake Canning Company. The intent was to provide Snow Flake with a reliable source of water during times of low river flow. This may be that pipe. As you can see is has deteriorated considerably. This picture of water spouting from a break is in a section just downstream from the trestle. The pressure is gravity fed from water moving in the pipe from an opening upstream. Just a little further downstream, the top part of the pipe has rusted away to form the "planter" you see here. Notice the grass growing in what is left of the pipe. |
