The Grave of Constant Southworth

April 3, 2000

Yesterday I visited the grave of the Revolutionary War soldier Constant Southworth and his family. This small cemetery is close to the Meadow Brook Falls on the Exeter Road. In fact, the same stream runs in a gully just behind the location.

If you have read the Guest Book here on The Cattail Press you know of Jeff Jacob's question about this site and the answer sent in by Peter Smith.

Just as Jeff and Peter explained, the single carved head stone is accompanied by a number of plain flat rocks apparently placed to mark other graves.

I believe that graves are hallowed ground, not because the dead are there, but because the living care for the sites in remembrance. These simple flat stones speak eloquently of the care someone of little means took long ago to remember their loved ones.
