Lately, in Corinna...

An extensive system of pipes and pumps are used to move water around the work site. The river flow is pumped around the excavation in the large black pipe seen here. The metal pipes collect contaminated water from the excavation holes and the truck washing stations. That water is treated. The contamination is removed before it is released back into the river. The contamination is not being allow to flow down stream. Samples of the water are taken regularly downstream to be sure the cleanup is not harming the river or Sebasticook Lake in Newport.

They have found that the soil contamination in Areas 2 and 3 is connected. The two areas join in one large area that must be excavated. As a result, the railroad trestle must be removed. Some of us are hoping that the granite in the trestle foundation can be re-used somewhere in the site. However, we must remember, the granite is the property of the land owner, Guilford Transportation.
