This is one of the soil decontamination areas still under construction at the former mill location. When the bed is complete, the pipes visible here will be buried under crushed rock. After placing about two feet of contaminated soil on top, hot air will be forced into the pipes to heat the soil. As the hot air comes up though the soil, the chlorobenzene will come out with it. A cover and blowers will collect the contaminated air and force it through a series of condensers and filters to remove the chemicals. In a few days the soil will be decontaminated. The cleaned soil will be taken away and replaced with a new batch to start the process over again. |
