I haven't sent in anything for awhile but saw Jane on this morning and told Sallie so I am sending a little question... Nice time of the year.. We also look for the crane every time we come into town... Question... Does anyone know how old that crane is.?????? If there are some old operators around they will know.. Bet it is older than a lot of us...

Date: July 10, 2001 Name: Susan Location: Ledyard CT Email: suezqgirl@hotmail.com Comment: What a great pic of the new perspective! My family will be coming through in August and am sure we will be checking it out. I enjoy seeing the daily updates. Great job.
Date: July 10, 2001 Name: Carl Smith Location: Hometown, USA Email: Comment: Your July 8 picture is a bigger gem. Couldn't let that out-of-towner cousin Jane get ahead. Ken, I marvel both at your discipline in maintaining this site and your creativity as an amateur photographer. It was great to get the panoramic view. It puts the area in a different perspective even for someone that drives by every day. Now if we could find the person to do the pictorial vision of downtown Corinna of the future. Thanks again.
Date: July 7, 2001 Name: Jane Quimby Biscoe Location: Waldoboro, Maine Email: mb81036@midcoast.com Comment: The July 6th picture was a gem - a great shot of the new bridge railing with the VERY familiar design; and my grandparents' house in the background. Nostalgia rules!
All good wishes for a pleasant summer to the Cattail Crowd -

Date: July 4, 2001 Name: Norm Clarke Location: here Email: npclarke@gwi.net Comment: Ken,
Liked the moose as well. More great photos! Peggy and I spent a couple of days on the coast to celebrate our anniversary. A young bull moose wandered all around the inn for a while Sunday. I was thinking, boy is this a tourist set up or what! I wonder where it was trained.
As for Wes Harris' question, there was a piece of property beside the inn for sale. 14 acres and an average ranch style house. Only 1.2 million. It was on the ocean but nothing special.
Date: July 4, 2001 Name: June Jaworski Location: jaworski@tdstelme.net Email: Corinna, ME Comment: Today's picture shows what used to be an old apple orchard and blackberry patch plus small woods area. Many people never knew about the area. It looks quite big in this picture. We say it is Corinna's new swimming pool since the last 2 rain storms have caused a good run-off which has accumulated quite a bit of water at the foot of the hill inside the wall area. there is some in this picture but it is hard to pick out. Glad it is not contaminated water-at this point, anyway. they are now putting up posts for the chain link fence that will surround this area. They have built a totally new gravel road to get to the bog.
Date: July 3, 2001 Name: Judy Doore Location: Town Office Email: Comment: Corey did a wonderful job with those photos! You are right, Dad, he does have a gift for getting close shots. Perhaps we could arrange for Rick Leighton to follow Corey around a bit. Rick has been coming to Maine for many years and has yet to ever see a Moose. He would love to! He is beginning to think it's a tourist gimmick but Corey has proven that thought wrong. Judy
Date: July 3, 2001 Name: Wes Harris Location: Ft Gordon, GA Email: mainex3@yahoo.com Comment: Wonderful overhead pic of the site. I think you're right Ken...Looks like there will be almost double of what's in the old stockpile.
PS....Weather is too humid down here in Georgia. Anybody want to trade places for the summer??
Date: July 1, 2001 Name: Mary Bowden Location: Corinna Email: Comment: Great job, Corey on your Moose picture!

Date: June 30, 2001 Name: Susan Location: Ledyard, CT Email: Suezqgirl@hotmail.com Comment: I was just wondering who takes all of the great pics of the area? The foxes, the wallpaper pics, etc. I really enjoy the landscape scenes. Keep up the beautiful photography! It makes me proud to be a MAINER! :)
Susan- I take most of the pictures. Sometimes other members of the family do too. -Ken
Date: June 30, 2001 Name: Andy Davis Location: Ft.Myers , Fla Email: Davandybrenda@aol.com Comment: We are enjoying the news and pictures on the cattail press. Keep up the good work. Our weather is nice but warm. We are finally getting rain. We plan to be in the area in Sept.
Date: June 28, 2001 Name: Jim Louder Location: Corinna Email: jloud@tdstelme.net Comment: We can forgive you, Ken, for getting the Exeter and Stetson roads mixed up. Just don't get the clean dirt pile and the contaminated pile mixed up.
Keep up the good work. We are all enjoying the pictures and information you are providing.Jim- I will be careful of that! -Ken
Date: June 28, 2001 Name: Howard I Small Location: Yarmouth Me Email: how-SMALL@webtv.net Comment: Dear Ken, It seems my memory was incorrect, date of Realty Hotel fire was 1928. Both of your great aunts were pretty girls and very good dancers. Myra and I won several prize dances at various pavilions. A pleasure to met one of her nephews. My folks were the first proprietors of Kenwood Inn. It was named after the mill. They were there until they moved away. My uncle Ivan married Roy and Guy Pearson's mother being their step father.
Date: June 27, 2001 Name: Lorraine hunter Location: corinna. Email: lhunter@tdstelme.net Comment: Oops Ken, the Odd fellows Hall was on rt 222 when I passed by today! Hot day so we understand !! You have a good day!!
LorraineLorraine- Thank you for pointing this out. Since I was very young I have always made the mistake of reversing the Exeter and Stetson Roads. I'm glad you all keep me straight. -Ken
Date: June 27, 2001 Name: Howard I Small Location: Yarmouth ME Email: Comment: A dear old friend and class mate at CUA Jerome Emerson referred me to your site. It sure is a far cry from the Corinna I remember. My parents were the proprietors of the Realty Hotel 1925 to 1929 when it burned down. I was the last out I was so overcome by smoke the local doctor had women giving me black coffee until morning. My dog was overcome and died on the bed. Would you be related to the Dow that married a sister to Myra and Thelma Cook?
I remember taking a swim at the upper dam as a boy. It was quite a hang out. Striar was wool buyer for Kenwood Mills at that time. I wonder if he realized the damage he was doing with the Main St mill. If Corinna folks are as resourceful as they were during the depression of 29 it will have a new birth and be a better place. Congratulations on the great good you are doing through your site.Howard- Thank you. I think you are right about the people of Corinna and the town. Myra and Thelma Cook's sister was Carmen. She and her husband, Herbert Dow Sr. were my grand parents. -Ken
Date: June 27, 2001 Name: Paul Shaw Location: Corinth, Maine Email: pandt@telplus.net Comment: Doing a great job with the pictures of Corinna. I look at the site everyday just to see what new. I really hope that all this work will help the town become a great place to live and work again. I was also wondering if the Odd Fellows Hall was going to get painted or something done to the outside of the building. The new location is fantastic but with no other buildings beside it, it looks unpleasant. I really hope something is going to be done. It would be a shame to have a new road and river, just to leave the Odd Fellows Hall looking like it does.
Paul- I agree. -Ken
Date: June 26, 2001 Name: Bernard T. Morancie Location: Brewer, Maine Email: BMIKE74@AOL.COM Comment: Dear Ken and All "Catail Gang"
Sallie, Delia and I were up to the old town yesterday and the bridge does look very good. We didn't see the "OOZ" but they will have to find out the cause and take care of it I would think. It sure looks like the new road will be straight now but it didn't for a long while..
Hope they fix some of the other crowned and worn out road before and after the new part..

Date: June 25, 2001 Name: Lois Newcomb Rowe Location: Downtown Dixmont Email: lrowe@uninets.net Comment: Hi Ken,
I have been reading the "Cattail" for a long time now. I have never signed the guest book before because I didn't want to intrude on all of the "true" Corinna people; after all I grew up way over in "East Newport". My father did work for many years at Eastland and retired from there so I guess I do have a connection to Corinna! I know that you reach a lot of people so
I thought that this would be a great way to also reach many of our Nokomis Alumni. We have formed a Nokomis Alumni Association and are planning our first "reunion" on August 4, 2001 at the high school. We will be honoring the classes of 71, 76, 81, 86, 91 and 96. ALL classes are encouraged to attend. Because this is our organizational year we need all the involvement
we can get so people, PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND! If anyone would like more info they may contact
me or look for handouts and posters at local businesses. People can also go online at MSAD48.org and register with the alumni association so that we will know where you are for future years. This year we are depending on advertisements and word of mouth. Thanks for helping get the word out and hope to see you there!
Thank you,
Lois
P.S. Class of '76, where are you?
Date: June 25, 2001 Name: Crosby Redman Grindle ("Bing") Location: Roanoke, VA Email: crgrindle@worldnet,att.net Comment: Hi, Ken,
It's been a while since I've submitted a message but my wife Geri and I pull up the site every morning and enjoy seeing the cleanup progress. We are curious about the decontamination process of that huge pile of bad soil. Will it be trucked someplace or done there and what method is used to make all that soil friendly again. It's difficult to have a mental picture of just how it's done!
Hope to get back to Corinna this fall. We love Maine and my old ties as a grandchild in CorinnaBing- The soil will be decontaminated here in Corinna, next summer, in a process that uses heat to remove the chlorobenzenes. By the time they start there may be 100,000 tons of soil to fix. After the process, the soil will be relatively rock-free and suitable for all uses. It will be something to see. -Ken
Date: June 24, 2001 Name: Jane Quimby Biscoe Location: Waldoboro, ME Email: mb81036@midcoast.com Comment: What a blast from the past to see the design of the new bridge railing! I remember the old Main Street bridge in the 1940's and the railings were nearly identical to the present one. Is this a coincidence or did some historically savvy person suggest this to the builders? I'd love to know--
Ken, what a pleasure to meet you and Julie at the Alumni Banquet. Your talk was excellent - you are such a fine source of information for so many. Corinna is lucky indeed!
Cheers - JaneThank you, Jane. I enjoyed the banquet and the opportunity to speak. I believe the EPA chose the railing design for the new bridge based on discussions held with Corinna residents and meetings with local officials. -Ken
Date: June 23, 2001 Name: Norm Clarke Location: Several shots over par Email: npclarke@gwi.net Comment: Ken,
The "ooze" coming from the Odd Fellow's Hall is no surprise. Remember my comments, in a previous letter, about the problems in Corinna resulting from "The Hall"? Told you so.
Date: June 22, 2001 Name: Location: Email: Comment: Ken,
The bridge is looking good. Reminds me of the old bridge that was there when I was a little girl. We could look down in the water from both sides of the bridge. Before the mill crossed the stream. Never thought I'd ever be able to do that again. Makes me old don't it ! !
Also (Fred McFarland) I have lost your e-mail add: Please sent it to me thanks.
LorraineLorraine - I like the new bridge railing, too. I'm pleased that it is like something that was there in the past. -Ken
Date: June 22, 2001 Name: Jeff Jacob Location: Corinna Email: jjacob@tdstelme.net Comment: Ken-When the new river bed is first used, will they be removing the upper or lower levee first? And if the downstream barrier is removed first, will not the river temporarily flow 'upstream' to the new bridge before it finally flows 'downstream' from the Mill Pond?
This could be a future trivia question.
(And while I'm asking all these stupid questions, what the heck is that spooky multi-colored liquid oozing out from behind the Odd Fellow's Hall?)Jeff -Interesting questions. I'm not sure about the riverbed switch-over. Might be a few good photos there. As for the liquid...I wonder what it might be. -Ken
Date: June 18, 2001 Name: Deanna Location: stetson Email: tbear@midmaine.com Comment: I was wondering if anyone out there knew the trails for four-wheelers. or how to obtain them on the web. I wanted to go from Newport to Hartland but I couldn't find a way. Are there any such things as a trail for four wheelers? or can you only go down the rail road
tracks. Please help if anyone can help I would appreciate it.
Thank you.

Date: June 9, 2001 Name: Wayne Brown Location: Fort Myers, FL Email: rubway@earthlink.net Comment: Hi Ken and all friends on this website. We arrived home in Fort Myers about midnight Thursday night. Did not really find time yesterday to visit here. It really was a grand and very emotional evening for me to be with so many at the CUA alumni banquet. I was especially glad to meet you, Everett Simpson, and some others - for the first time. And of course there were some old friends and former schoolmates - although most of them came after I was there. We were privileged to visit Carl Smith at his lovely home. And I would add a loud AMEN to his, my classmate's Philip Young and some others remarks concerning your remarks at the banquet. All I can add now is- KEEP UP THE GRAND WORK YOU ARE DOING FOR ALL OF US. Wayne
Date: June 9, 2001 Name: Brian Knowles Location: Rochester NY Email: bpknowles@aol.com Comment: Just checking in. The new stream bed looks like it will be a far cry from the old days. There definitely is going to need to be a tree planting session.
I had earlier mentioned Peregrine Falcons, for anyone who maybe interested, the Falcon's nest on top of Kodak Office has a live camera watching the nest. There are 4 young birds in the nest overlooking the city and the Red Wings baseball field. There is a website showing photos from the 4 cameras. These photos are updated every minute.
Thanks for the site.

Sincerely, Philla-Mae.Philla-Mae- I'm sorry we didn't take many pictures of people at reunion. We should have. -Ken
Date: June 6, 2001 Name: Tom Thompson Location: Corinna, ME Email: sporty_340@yahoo.com Comment: Great job on the site ever since the very beginning. Do you know where the new 4 wheeler trail will be this summer seeing as how they are going to take out the old bridge on main street?
Tom- This is a good question. A new bridge will be built for the trail across the river to replace the railroad trestle. I am not sure about exactly when that will be. I will ask about this. -Ken
Date: June 4, 2001 Name: Patty Trask Location: Kenduskeag, ME Email: pattea087@aol.com Comment: Hi Ken
Now that I know about this site just checking to see what's new. I did talk with Jim Pearson today and he set me straight on the correct name of the inn (Kenwood) Thanks again for a great job.
Date: June 4, 2001 Name: Carl Smith Location: Hometown, USA Email: Comment: Perhaps this got edited out of Norman's observations, but I more likely expect that he simply got carried away with his significant administrative CUA Reunion duties. For the benefit of those not in attendance, the highlight of the evenings events, in my opinion, was a well deserved standing ovation for Ken Dow. This followed Ken's brief presentation on the history, rationale, inspirations, and some anecdotal incidents of the daily routine of Cattail. And in his typical modest style he gave credits to all others. Congratulations again, Ken.
Date: June 3, 2001 Name: Norm Clarke Location: Wet Pittsfield Email: npclarke@gwi.net Comment: Ken, Thank you for coming to the CUA Alumni Banquet. People were glad to put a face with the name behind this great web site. I connects so many people. The banquet was a success in spite of a few glitches. There were the Frank Glithces from Farmington and Jimmy Glitch from Connecticut, but otherwise, it went well.
I got an answer to the brick project question too.
Thanks again for this site. I like to get caught up in this "web".
PS: The moth came from Florida. They winter in Sarasota and summer on the coast of Maine. The
one you had must have been crusing the yard sales in the area.
PSS: To Mrs. Russell: Grammar tips accepted.

Date: June 2, 2001 Name: Brian Knowles Location: Rochester NY Email: bpknowles@aol.com Comment: Great photo of the moth. I am sure that Norm will have a good explanation as to how it made the journey to Northeast!!!!! He is probably busy with the Alumni banquet, so we may have to wait a day or two to learn the answers to life's mysterious questions. I hope everyone has great time at the banquet and tour of the old Academy. I would very much like to be there today but will have to say hello to all through this media.
Thanks for the site.

Date: June 2, 2001 Name: Sarah Winter Derevjanik Location: Berwick, Maine Email: misaseer@mediaonenet Comment: Hi Ken,
I'm not a moth expert but I think you may have identified the wrong moth. I first saw a similar moth three years ago resting on my deck. Since then I see a couple each year. I never knew what they were until I came across the picture of one in "Downeast". I believe it is a Cecropia silkmoth. It's range is from Nova Scotia and Maine south to Florida; west across southern Canada and the eastern United States to the Rocky Mountains. Follow this link for more info.
I lived in Corinna in 70's from 1st - 7th grade. One of my favorites classes was Science with Mr. Dow! I check the website daily . . . keep up the good work!Sarah - I think you are correct. The picture on the site you referenced is certainly the same kind of moth. -Ken
Date: June 1, 2001 Name: Patty Chambers Trask Location: Kenduskeag, ME Email: pattea087@aol.com Comment: I received a letter today from a family friend who now lives in New Hampshire. She wrote about your website and how much she enjoys checking it out every morning. I have been viewing the entire website for more than three hours tonight and found it to be "fantastic." I must agree that even though I no longer live in Corinna, Corinna still lives in me. I have some wonderful childhood memories and I still frequently pass through when in the area to see all the changes.
Now that I know about cattail I certainly will return often. I found everything to be quite interesting. I really enjoyed all the pictures, only wish that there was more like Turner Inn (I think that is what it was called and also the Corinna Junior High School which I attended 7th and 8th grade (1958-1960). Thank you for doing this site for everyone to view and especially for those who have a connection past and present.
